Volunteers are the life and blood of AIDS Services of Austin. By supporting services for people living with HIV and AIDS, or being a part of prevention programs for people at-risk, our wonderful volunteers change and impact lives every day.
In addition to giving their compassion and time volunteering in our office, the food bank, and at fundraising events, they are an integral part of making our Prevention programs so successful.
Our Foundations of Counseling and Testing Program Coordinator, Stephanie Guerra, was a volunteer for ASA before she became a part of our staff. “My volunteer experience in Prevention was very warm and inviting. The atmosphere and the staff were so friendly,” Stephanie recalls. “It was also really productive. I was gaining knowledge and learning a lot about HIV prevention and care.”
Every year, our volunteers help make thousands of safe-sex kits. “It’s a large task!” says Stephanie. “These kits are so important because condoms can be expensive. They play a vital role in starting those difficult conversations, because a lot of people are scared. It gives people an opportunity to learn and lower their risk.”
Volunteers from all walks of life give their talents and time to help Central Texans living with HIV and AIDS at ASA. “Sometimes volunteering comes from a passionate point of view, or some do it because they need to. For me, volunteering gave me a great deal of satisfaction to know that these services were available to the community—contributing to lowering the transmission of HIV,” says Stephanie. Whether volunteers are restocking food at the food bank, assisting with clerical and data entry, greeting people at the front desk, landscaping, or lending a helping hand at one of our events, they are making a difference in the lives of people affect by HIV.
AIDS Services of Austin is always looking for more passionate, talented people to join our team!
