ASA and Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) work together to provide free legal assistance to low income individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS in Central Texas. Since 1990, CAALP has provided free legal assistance to thousands living in our community.
CAALP accepts referrals from ASA and other local HIV/AIDS service providers and also runs monthly legal clinics. In addition, any eligible person may contact CAALP directly to apply for services.
CAALP assists clients through legal advice as well as referral to volunteer attorneys in the community for representation.
How can CAALP Help?
CAALP staff and volunteer attorneys help people with a wide range of civil legal matters including:
- Social security disability benefits
- Wills, advance directives and power of attorney documents
- Landlord-tenant, housing and foreclosure
- Bankruptcy and collections
- Consumer protection
- Expunction of criminal records
- Occupational driver’s licenses
- Name and gender change
- Medicaid and food stamp denials
- Unemployment compensation denials
- Divorce and custody (in certain limited cases)
- Matters specific to HIV-status
CAALP does not help with criminal defense or immigration matters.

To determine whether CAALP might be able to help with your legal matter, you must apply for assistance.

CAALP attorneys are available to review your case and give you legal advice at monthly legal clinics hosted at ASA. CAALP is hosting monthly legal clinics on the following dates:

CAALP officially formed in 1990 as a program of AIDS Services of Austin. A volunteer-based organization, CAALP provides free legal assistance to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS whose income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Since 1990, CAALP has helped more than 3,000 HIV infected people in central Texas.
