Current Volunteer Activities
Most day-to-day volunteer activities at ASA take place Monday - Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., plus Tuesday Night Volunteer Drop-In, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Some practical tasks, community fairs and development activities, especially related to special events, take place evenings and weekends, as well.
Reception Assistant Do you like working with people? Talking on the phone? Helping direct people with problems to possible solutions? ASA can use your assistance! Regular weekly shifts (3 or more hrs) are requested, with a broad range of scheduling opportunities available Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm (but especially Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Speaking Spanish is helpful but not required, as Spanish-speaking staff are always on hand.
General Clerical & Data Entry Assist in mailings, typing, filing, Resource Library maintenance and other clerical duties. For data entry projects, proficiency is needed, variously, in Word, Excel, Access or Provide. Some activities require daytime availability, but others are done during Tuesday Night Drop-In, 5-9pm.
Food Bank ASA’s Food Bank is a friendly, enjoyable, fast-paced environment and our most active volunteer program.
Food Bank Stockers repackage bulk purchases into individual portions; stock & organize the grocery shelves. Regular weekly shifts (2-3 hrs) are requested; available the 2nd & 4th Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesday mornings of each month, 10:00am-12:30pm.
Food Banker Distributors fill food orders, sack groceries, and assist clients with their food ‘shopping.’ Delivery drivers take food to home-bound clients. Regular weekly shifts (2-3 hrs) are requested; available the 2nd and 4th Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons each month. Six month commitment requested.
Practical Support Volunteers occasionally assist clients with practical tasks: running errands, providing transportation, helping a client move, housekeeping, yard maintenance, etc. This is an ad hoc activity, not regularly scheduled; volunteers provide their own transportation. Volunteers also accomplish many of the building support tasks for ASA's facilities.
Development and Special Events Financial support from individuals, businesses and foundations keeps ASA going! Assisting with varied special events, data entry, office support (answering phones, running errands), and desktop publishing are among the ways to help. Volunteering for ASA's Development Department may be as simple as taking tickets at the door of an event or as complex as chairing the volunteer committee producing the event. Scheduling is variable, especially when related to specific events.
