Founded in 1987, The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. Virtually every one of the more than 40,000 colorful panels that make up the Quilt memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS.
From October 4 - 17, 2010, blocks from the quilt will be on display throughout Austin. Locations for 2010 include:
Austin City Hall
The Blanton Museum of Art
Huston-Tillotson University
The Long Center for the Performing Arts
Texas Performing Arts - Bass Concert Hall*
The University of Texas at Austin - Student Health Center
*The six quilt panels at Bass Concert Hall will be on display from October 1 to November 1.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt is on display as part of Austin Red Week, a week of events to raise funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS in Central Texas. Other Red Week events include the National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and AIDS Walk Austin. The Quilt in Austin is sponsored by Charity Dynamics.
